Italian connection

Italian connection

PREMIER Mike Rann, who has written to Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi expressing concern at the proposed closure of the Italian consulate in Adelaide (The Advertiser, yesterday), has my support.

Yet, judging by recent accounts of Mr Berlusconi's private life, I fear he may be too busy to read Mr Rann's letter in time to prevent the consulate closing. If this occurs, perhaps the Premier could write again, this time to the Italian Government (which may not be so busy), in order for it to consider making a donation towards the proposed McLaren Vale Piazza.

The Piazza, which will be located in the centre of McLaren Vale, will be a permanent reminder of the valued and positive contribution of Italian migrants and their descendants in the Southern Vales.

In addition, it will give the heart of McLaren Vale a wonderful, formal public space.

  1. Mike Runn is messing around about Italian politics and Italian institutions. First of all the Italian Prime Minister has not any power of making proposals or taking autonomous decisions. In the case in question regarding consulates only the Minister of Foreign Affairs makes decisions. If Silvio does not agree or has something to say the matter is discussed and voted in the Cabinet meetings.
The Tresure asks the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to reduce his budget and he acts accordingly. Silvio is totally unaware and out to this.
Runn should consider that South Australia has under his governement closed the Agent General office in London, that SA has not any representation in Italy. That the participation to the Fair of Bari looks more like having been an excuse to visit the region where his wife is originating at the taxpayer expenses than bringing any advantage to SA. Lets talk seriosly about enancing SA and Italy relations. The Consulate of Adealide has absolutely nothing to do with it.
And finally the Australian press should give up insulting our prime minister. The Italian newspaper have never address to Don Dunstan as a travenstite premier ! Nighther Bob H. the drunkman premier of Australia.
    Regards to all Vincenzo Romiti
